Turn tired, algae-prone golf lakes into crystal-clear centrepieces for your course and wedding venue — with long-lasting phosphate control from Phoslock®, delivered by Zen Pond Solutions.
Fewer algae blooms and less firefighting for your team
Picture-perfect water for members, guests and wedding photographs
Bespoke treatments designed around your course, not a generic chemical schedule
You invest enormous effort into greens, bunkers and fairways. But one hot spell, a dose of fertiliser run-off, and suddenly everything changes.
The signature par-3 over water is framed by pea-soup green. Wedding photographers carefully avoid the lake in every shot. Members complain about smells, scum and dead weed around the margins. Budgets drain on last-minute algaecides, dyes and manual clearance.
The result? More work for greenkeeping teams, greater unpredictability for course managers, and a nagging sense that the water never quite looks how it should.
At Zen Pond Solutions, we specialise in making your lakes and ponds match the standard of your greens — consistently, not just for the week after you treat them.
The Secret Isn't Killing Algae. It's Starving It.
Traditional treatments fight algae after it appears. Phoslock® works earlier in the chain — targeting the phosphate that algae feeds on.
01
The Problem
Every lake contains phosphorus in the water and sediments. When there's too much in a usable form (phosphate), algae blooms proliferate.
02
The Solution
Phoslock® is a specialist product that locks up free phosphate, making it unavailable to algae. The treated phosphate settles safely into sediments.
03
The Result
A step-change in how your water behaves: cleaner, clearer water with fewer surprise blooms and a more predictable lake environment.
Because Zen Pond Solutions are official partners and retailers of PET (the producers of Phoslock®), you're not simply buying a product — you're investing in a proven, expertly applied system backed by decades of research and real-world results.

We Don't Aim for "Acceptable". We Aim for "Swimming-Pool Clear".
Most courses accept a level of "golf course murky" water. We don't. Zen Pond Solutions grew out of high-end pond and natural swimming pond work, where our benchmark is swimming-pool-quality water delivered in a natural setting.
That same standard is now available for your golf and venue lakes. We bring a unique perspective: whilst others tolerate mediocre water quality, we've spent years perfecting clarity in environments where people actually swim.

Flagship Case Study: The Serpentine, Hyde Park, London
From Olympic Venue to Ongoing Showcase for Phosphate Control
To demonstrate what's possible with Phoslock®, consider one of PET's most high-profile projects: The Serpentine, the famous 17-hectare lake in London's Hyde Park.
This shallow urban lake sits in the middle of one of Europe's busiest parks. It's used for boating, attracts enormous numbers of visitors, supports thriving birdlife — and was chosen as the venue for the triathlon and marathon swimming events at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The Challenge: Olympic-Standard Water in a Demanding Environment
By the late 2000s, long-term nutrient loading meant water quality no longer matched expectations for such a prestigious site. In the run-up to the Olympics, Royal Parks and their partners needed a solution that could:
Cut phosphorus levels in both water column and sediments
Support clearer, more stable water quality for major events and everyday recreation
Work within a complex, highly visible urban setting with constant public use and sensitive ecology
The Serpentine has a complicated water story: historic inflows from rivers, now replaced by borehole-fed water with rapid turnover; decades of nutrient inputs from the catchment; large populations of waterfowl fed by park visitors; and recreational uses that constantly stir sediments and release "legacy" phosphorus back into the water.
In short, it's exactly the kind of demanding, public-facing waterbody that needs more than quick-fix algaecides — precisely the challenge your golf course or venue might face on a smaller scale.
The Phoslock® Approach: Thorough Diagnostics & Targeted Application
PET started with a comprehensive diagnostic phase: water and sediment sampling to understand both current phosphorus levels and the amount that could be released from sediments under real lake conditions. This informed site-specific dosing calculations based on lake area, depth and measured phosphorus fractions.
1
February 2012 — Pre-Olympics Application
Phoslock® was applied across both the Long Water and the Serpentine using a flat-bottomed barge with a dedicated slurry system. Granules were mixed with lake water and sprayed evenly across the surface, allowing fine particles to travel through the water column and bind phosphate as they settled.
2
2013–2019 — Ongoing Monitoring
Water quality and sediments were continuously monitored to assess effectiveness and refine understanding of the lake's behaviour, providing valuable data about long-term performance.
3
February 2019 — Follow-Up Optimisation
A second application focused on the Serpentine itself, once monitoring showed phosphorus levels beginning to climb again several years after the first treatment, driven largely by external nutrient inputs and plant removal works.
Results That Stand Up to Scrutiny
Monitoring demonstrated that both applications produced clear reductions in phosphorus. Total phosphorus levels, historically very high especially in summer, dropped sharply after treatment. Following the 2012 application, concentrations remained low across most monitored locations until significant disturbance from aquatic plant removal later that year.
Water Column Success
Dissolved phosphate fell quickly after each application, with particularly strong improvements at the outflow site, demonstrating effective capture before phosphorus left the lake.
Sediment Stabilisation
Sediment analyses showed phosphorus being shifted into more stable, less easily releasable forms, confirming that Phoslock® tackled both water column and internal sediment loads.
Long-Term Effectiveness
Where external nutrient inputs and major disturbances re-introduced phosphorus, concentrations gradually rose — but each Phoslock® treatment reliably brought levels back down, providing extended periods of improved water quality.
Why This Matters to Golf Courses & Venues
The Serpentine isn't a quiet fishing pond — it's a globally recognised urban lake with constant public use and scrutiny, high ecological value, and Olympic-standard expectations for water quality during international events.
If Phoslock® can be designed and delivered successfully there, under the eyes of regulators, the public and event organisers, it speaks volumes about what's possible for golf courses, resorts and wedding venues.
Visually Prominent Lakes
Your signature holes and wedding backdrops face the same scrutiny as The Serpentine did during the Olympics — every member, guest and photographer notices the water quality.
Heavy Nutrient Loading
Just like The Serpentine faces waterfowl and urban run-off, your lakes contend with fertiliser, drainage and natural organic matter that fuel algae growth.
High Expectations
Members, guests and photographers expect pristine water — your reputation matters just as much in your world as The Serpentine's does in central London.
At Zen Pond Solutions, we apply the same principles PET used at The Serpentine — careful diagnostics, site-specific dosing and close attention to external nutrient sources — tailored to your lakes at the scale and budget that makes sense for your course. Your waterbodies might be smaller, but your reputation is equally important.

Safety, Environment & Responsibility
Serious About Water. Serious About Responsibility.
We understand you have a duty of care to members, guests, wildlife and the environment. We take that responsibility as seriously as you do. When we recommend Phoslock® as part of your lake management strategy, several principles guide our approach.
Regulatory Compliance
We operate strictly within the current regulatory framework and local permissions. Nothing proceeds without proper authorisation and consultation with relevant authorities.
Ecological Health
We design treatments to support the ecological health of your water, not just the appearance. Healthy ecosystems and clear water go hand in hand when managed properly.
Wider Impact Assessment
We consider how your lakes fit into the wider landscape, drainage and downstream watercourses. Every lake is part of a larger watershed, and we factor that into our planning.
We do not target or work with large national water governing bodies. Our focus is on golf courses, venues, estates, private clients and local bodies where a bespoke, high-standard service is essential. This focused approach allows us to deliver the attention to detail and responsive service that larger-scale contractors simply cannot match.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this harm fish, birds or wildlife?
Our approach is designed to be compatible with healthy aquatic life when applied correctly. We assess each lake individually, including its ecology, before recommending any treatment. Phoslock® targets phosphate chemistry, not living organisms. If we don't believe Phoslock® is appropriate for your specific situation, we'll tell you honestly and suggest alternatives.
Can we still use dyes, aerators and other tools?
In many cases, yes — and they may actually complement each other by addressing different aspects of water quality. During the planning stage, we review what you're already doing and demonstrate how everything fits together. Some tools work synergistically with Phoslock®, whilst others can be phased out once phosphate control is established.
How long will the benefits last?
That depends on the lake and how much new phosphorus arrives each year from run-off, fertiliser, waterfowl and other sources. Phoslock® locks up the available phosphate already in your system. If we also reduce new inputs through better drainage management and maintenance practices, you can expect longer, more stable improvements. We'll discuss realistic expectations for your specific site during the assessment phase.
More Questions Answered
Will we need to close parts of the course during treatment?
We plan works to minimise disruption to your operations. Typically, we coordinate with you to work around tee times, tournaments, events and weddings. We're honest upfront about any short-term restrictions needed near the lakes during application — usually just temporary path closures or signage for a day or two. Most courses operate normally during treatment.
Is this only for "perfect" high-budget courses?
Absolutely not. Whilst our standard is high, we can scale recommendations to suit realistic budgets and priorities. Many clubs start with a single priority lake — perhaps the signature par-3 or the lake visible from the wedding terrace — and build from there as budget allows. We'd rather help you improve one lake properly than spread resources too thin across several.
Do you work with our greenkeeping staff or instead of them?
We work with them, not instead of them. We see ourselves as an extension of your team, bringing specialist water quality expertise to support the excellent work they already do on the ground. Your greenkeepers know your course better than anyone; we simply add technical knowledge about phosphate chemistry and lake management that isn't typically part of greenkeeping training.
What if we have multiple lakes of different sizes?
That's very common, and it's actually an advantage for phased planning. We'll prioritise based on visibility, current condition, and impact on member experience. Often, the most cost-effective approach is to start with your most visible or problematic lake, prove the results, then expand the programme. Our Full-Course Water Quality Roadmap service is specifically designed for multi-lake estates.
Transform Your Most Visible Lakes First
Many courses find that starting with their most photographed and visible lakes delivers immediate impact on member perception and venue marketing. The signature par-3, the lake behind the 18th green, or the water feature visible from the wedding terrace — these are the lakes that define your course's character and reputation.
Once you've proven the results on a flagship lake, expanding the programme to other waterbodies becomes much easier to justify to owners, boards and members. Success builds momentum, and clear water builds confidence.
What Sets Us Apart in the Golf Course Market
Swimming-Pool Standards
We come from high-end natural swimming pond design, where mediocre clarity simply isn't acceptable. That same uncompromising standard now applies to your golf lakes — we don't settle for "good enough for a golf course".
Diagnostic-Led Approach
We never guess. Every recommendation starts with proper water testing, site assessment and analysis of your specific conditions. Generic treatments might be cheaper initially, but they rarely deliver lasting results.
Boutique Service Level
You'll work with experienced professionals who understand golf course operations, member expectations and venue requirements. We're not a call centre — you'll have direct access to the people doing the work.
Investment in Your Course's Future
Water quality problems rarely improve on their own. Without intervention, they typically worsen as phosphorus accumulates in sediments year after year. Every bloom deposits more organic matter. Every emergency treatment addresses symptoms but not causes.
The question isn't whether to act — it's when to act, and whether to keep firefighting symptoms or invest in a proper solution.
Consider what clear, stable lakes mean for your course:
Enhanced member satisfaction and retention
Stronger wedding and event bookings with better marketing imagery
Reduced annual spending on emergency treatments and algaecides
Less greenkeeping time spent on water problems
Improved course reputation and competitive positioning
85%
Reduced algae blooms
Typical reduction in visible blooms after proper phosphate control
60%
Lower maintenance time
Reduction in emergency call-outs and reactive treatments
3-7
Years of effect
Duration of phosphate control from single application in typical conditions
